Austenitic Stainless Steel

Austenitic, or 300 series, stainless steels have an austenitic crystalline structure, which is a face-centered cubic crystal structure. The most common austenitic alloys are iron-chromium-nickel steels. They are non-magnetic and are the most corrosion resistant of the stainless steel group with fine mechanical properties. They cannot be hardened by heat treatment, but can be hardened significantly by cold-working.

Super austenitic stainless steels, such as alloy AL-6XN and 254SMO, exhibit great resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion because of high molybdenum content (>6%) and nitrogen additions, and the higher nickel content ensures better resistance to stress-corrosion cracking versus the 300 series. The higher alloy content of super austenitic steels makes them more expensive.

With varying Nickel and Chromium percentage and addition of Molybdenum, Nitrogen, Titanium, Tantalum / Columbium the various grades depending on their chemistry are used for various applications.

Properties:
  • Excellent cryogenic properties.
  • Good high-temperature strength and oxidation resistance.
  • Offer general corrosion resistance in the atmosphere, in many aqueous media, in the presence of foods, and in oxidizing acids such as nitric acid.
  • Excellent corrosion resistance in organic, acid, industrial and marine environments
  • The non-magnetic properties combined with exceptionally high toughness at all temperatures make these steels an excellent selection for a wide variety of applications
Typical Applications:
  • Kitchen sinks, Ovens
  • Pulp and Paper Industry
  • Architectural applications such as roofing and cladding, doors and windows
  • Aircraft
  • Balustrading
  • Benches and food preparation areas
  • Dairy and beverage industry
  • Food processing equipment
  • Heat exchangers
  • Chemical Processing
